Music Hall Jazz Jam Session
The jam session is integral in the history of jazz and jazz-education. For over a hundred years this has been the training ground for young musicians to share ideas. The jam session brings out the competitive nature in us but also serves as the social backdrop. Musicians understand that a key part of their development in jazz is to understand the jam session codes of conduct. If a jazz musician can survive the night, playing different tunes in strange keys, difficult tempos, interacting sometimes with virtual strangers, they belong to an elite club that speaks a language that only jazz musicians understand. This experience is impossible to replicate in the structure of a classroom; there are too many variables. It only works in a club, in front of an audience, in a respected jazz venue that serves as a musical beacon.
In an ideal setting, both experienced musicians and young musicians mingle socially and musically. Detroit offers the combination of a thriving professional scene and many colleges and high schools. It is critical in a young jazz musicians' training to receive a "bandstand education". This is what we hope to provide by combining a professional rhythm section with young jamming jazz musicians and vocalists from the Detroit Public Schools, Wayne State University, and even places beyond. Young musicians will not only be able to receive quality bandstand instruction, but also network with each other and share ideas.
People give Charlie Parker credit for creating bebop, but all of the insiders know that even though he had the initial seed, it was a group project, refined at jam sessions like Minton's Playhouse in Harlem. At Minton's, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Kenny Clarke and others all experimented to create the music that jazz musicians revere. What many of the insiders don't know is, that these beboppers received instruction at Minton's by the generation of great swing musicians before them at this jam session; Roy Eldridge, Clark Terry, Lester Young, and Coleman Hawkins, as they did from the generation before them.
At the Music Hall Jazz Cafe, we want develop and encourage the 21st century young jazz musicians to make their mark and keep jazz in the present instead of the past, while being tutored and guided musician/educators from the generation before them. If this person is a high school vocalist from our Vocal Jazz Academy or a jazz studies student from Wayne State, we will bring everyone together in this great sharing of ideas to be viewed in real time, in front whoever wishes to see musical history take place.

Mary Wynn releases new single “Great Things”
Poised to impact the world through her music ministry, Mary Wynn, is an inspiring praise & worship psalmist. As the word says your gift will make room for you. This scripture rings true for Mary. God is bringing her message before great people. Born in Saginaw, MI, this singer, songwriter, & musician currently resides in Detroit while ministering throughout the country. Playing the piano since the age of 9, directing church choirs, serving as the Minister of Music, and majoring in Vocal Music Education prepared Mary for her purpose, which is to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The sincerity in her presentation is apparent as she captures the heart and soul of all that listen. Mary’s mission is “to win souls for Christ, one soul at a time.” She desires to live a life that corresponds with her message so when she stands before the people they will receive her as God’s vessel.
This creative music process has been a long time coming because this is Mary’s 1st studio project in 13 yrs. Her two previous projects were live recordings. This time she decided to return to her roots and explore music on another level. The growth of Mary’s music ministry is apparent as you hear “Great Things”, which is a small taste of her upcoming project, “More”, set to be released in the spring of 2016. Mary’s vocal styling, thought provoking lyrics, developed songwriting skills, and overall delivery will clearly be displayed.
“Great Things” was written and arranged by her phenomenally gifted producer Ernest J. Lee @ the Minstrel’s Room, Atlanta, GA. This single will draw you in with its uplifting driving beat and fresh quartet style. It leaves you feeling inspired and encouraged knowing that God will continue to do Great Things for you. Mary’s soul-stirring vocals are clearly displayed in this hand clapping foot-stomping song that declares her witness of the life changing hand of God. After listening to this track you will anxiously await Mary’s nationwide release of her 4th CD Project entitled, “More” May 24, 2016.

Throughout his much accomplished musical life. He has done just about everything you could do as a musician.. Toured with legends, written and produced for major ads, attained a Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Music, performed as a member of one of the most storied HBCU Marching Bands, Southern University Marching Band a.k.a. “The Human Jukebox” and the list can, and does go on. It was only as of 2015. Did he decide to release his own original music as an artist. LASHAWN D. GARY, is music. in every element. The native Detroiter has a resume that reads like a career guide for one seeking a career in music. He has had more than hands on experience in many genres as not only a writer, but as composer, gifted pianist, producer, copyist, arranger and all areas in between.
On May 28 he will be performing selections from his debut album titled “LOVE, PEACE& PRAISE” . The superb project which features not only Traditional Jazz. But masterful Soul and Gospel influenced compositions. Soul Music gets its workouts with cuts like the smooth “Look into your Eyes” & “Runaway Love” featuring Chicago crooner Roderick Harper, who gives the likes of Will Downing a run for his money. And the Mid tempo “Every Time” featuring vocalist Melanie Rutherford, show the album is legitimately Soulful delivers on the Love, in its title. And on the Jazz side of things, GARY is a pianist virtuoso. Who seemingly glides magically across the ivories on cuts like “Now is The Time” , “Serenity” and the album title cut “Love, Peace & Praise” with arrangements that echo the influences of Ramsey Lewis and Joe Sample. It is an album very steeped in Jazz. And yes the Lord is present in the Jam session on the inspirational ” Lord You’re All I Need” fulfilling the Praise. It is a necessity to all who enjoy good music. Gary recently has begun to perform in support of the project as the demand to see him live has grown. He in fact will have performed at the legendary New Orleans Jazz festival as of this writing. LASHAWN GARY is the promise and fulfillment of his musical destiny. And to our benefit, we get to witness and experience to reverberation of this promise. DON'T MISS THIS INTIMATE AND SPECTACULAR PERFORMANCE!!
