Colin McCahill is an up-and-coming jazz saxophonist based in Detroit, Michigan. He primarily plays the alto saxophone but also performs on the tenor and soprano saxophones. McCahill is best known as the co-leader of DICHI, a Metro Detroit-based jazz collective that blends original music with soul, groove, and funk influences.
Background and Education
- Training: He graduated from the prestigious Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where he studied under renowned jazz saxophonist Gary Bartz.
- Relocation: After graduating, he moved to Detroit to immerse himself in the city's rich music scene.
- Honing His Craft: Colin has became a regular fixture at local jam sessions, performing frequently at venues like Bert's Marketplace, Cliff Bells, Baker's Keyboard Lounge, Parts and Labor, and Woodbridge Pub
Musical Projects & Influences
- DICHI Collective: McCahill co-founded and leads this ensemble alongside guitarist Hayden Cusmano. The group released their debut record, Woodward Groove, in the fall of 2025.
- Collaborations: He regularly performs as a sideman for various jazz, rock, and soul groups around Michigan, including regular appearances with the Kroon Band, Mike Leslie Band, and Mason Bays Group
- Influences: His style is heavily influenced by saxophone legends such as Cannonball Adderley, Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt, and Michael Brecker. He has performed curated tribute shows honoring Adderley's legacy
