DETROIT, MI — The Preservation of Jazz proudly announces a very special evening of gratitude, recognition, fellowship, and live music with The Preservation of Jazz Appreciation Ceremony & Live Music Showcase, taking place Thursday, September 10, 2026, at Aretha’s Jazz Café inside Detroit’s historic Music Hall.
Founded by award-winning jazz vocalist, producer, and cultural curator Sky Covington, The Preservation of Jazz has spent years creating stages for Detroit artists while celebrating the legends and traditions that shaped jazz and American music.
On September 10th, the spotlight will turn toward the people who have helped make that journey possible.
The evening will recognize an extraordinary family of vocalists, musicians, bandleaders, poets, hosts, emerging artists, production professionals, partners, and special contributors who have shared their gifts with The Preservation of Jazz throughout its journey.
From the beloved Satin Doll Revue and Take 5: The All-Male Jazz Revue to the Monday Night Music Series, tribute productions, poetry presentations, youth showcases, and special concerts, countless artists have contributed their talent to keeping this music alive.
This night is our opportunity to simply say:
Thank You.
Thank you for every song.
Thank you for every rehearsal.
Thank you for every note played.
Thank you for every stage shared.
Thank you for believing that preserving jazz means not only remembering those who came before us, but also celebrating the artists carrying the music forward today.
A CEREMONY WITH MUSIC AT ITS HEART
This will not be an ordinary awards ceremony.
Throughout the evening, special recognitions will be presented alongside a live music showcase, bringing together members of the Preservation of Jazz family for performances, musical moments, storytelling, laughter, and reflection.
Detroit favorite Mike Bonner will host the celebration, bringing the warmth and humor that have made him an important part of many Preservation of Jazz productions.
The evening will also celebrate the next generation of artists who are continuing the tradition and helping write the next chapter of Detroit jazz.
A NIGHT FOR THE PRESERVATION FAMILY
“This evening is about giving flowers while people can receive them,” says founder Sky Covington. “The Preservation of Jazz has never been one person. Every vocalist who stepped to the microphone, every musician who played a note, every host, poet, photographer, sound engineer, volunteer, partner, and supporter became part of this story. September 10th is our opportunity to bring that family together, celebrate what we have accomplished, and look toward what comes next.”
The evening will be both a celebration of the past and a glimpse into the future of The Preservation of Jazz.
Artists, supporters, jazz lovers, friends, family, and members of Detroit’s creative community are invited to join us for this very special occasion.
