DETROIT, MI — Sky Covington’s Preservation of Jazz Monday Night Music Series: Tributes continues Monday, November 9, with a special evening honoring the words, music and cultural legacy of Gil Scott-Heron, featuring Knowledge Born Allah at Aretha’s Jazz Café.
Poet. Musician. Author. Storyteller. Cultural observer.
Gil Scott-Heron created work that refused to fit neatly into one category. His fusion of spoken word, jazz, blues, soul and social commentary helped establish a musical and poetic language whose influence can still be heard generations later.
On November 9, Knowledge Born Allah takes the stage to celebrate that legacy through his own artistry, bringing the spirit of Scott-Heron’s music and spoken word into a contemporary Detroit setting.
THE REVOLUTION WILL BE REMEMBERED
Long before spoken word and hip-hop became major cultural forces, Scott-Heron was using rhythm and poetry to tell stories about the world around him.
Works including “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” “The Bottle” and “Lady Day and John Coltrane” became enduring parts of his catalog, while his collaborations with musician Brian Jackson further developed his distinctive fusion of poetry, jazz, soul and rhythm.
This tribute is not about imitation.
It is about remembering the artist, revisiting the work and allowing another generation to experience the power of words set against music.
KNOWLEDGE BORN ALLAH TAKES THE STAGE
For this special presentation, Knowledge Born Allah will bring his own voice and interpretation to the evening.
The combination of spoken word, music and storytelling makes the Gil Scott-Heron tribute a natural addition to Sky Covington’s Preservation of Jazz, whose Monday Night Music Series explores not only legendary jazz performers but the artists and movements connected to the larger musical family tree.
“Gil Scott-Heron reminds us that music can make you move, but it can also make you think,” says producer and curator Sky Covington. “His words carried rhythm, truth, history and observation. This night gives us an opportunity to honor that legacy while allowing Knowledge Born Allah to bring his own artistry to the stage.”
MUSIC. POETRY. HISTORY. LEGACY.
Hosted by Detroit comedian Mike Bonner, the November 9 presentation continues a Monday-night tradition built around live performance, musical history and fellowship.
Through Sky Covington’s Preservation of Jazz, legendary music is introduced and reintroduced to audiences through Detroit performers—not through impersonation, but through interpretation.
On November 9, the microphone belongs to the poet.
The rhythm belongs to the band.
And the evening belongs to the words.
