Recording artist and saxophonist, Ivan Benning, has been growing his audience since his first project in
2003. A Detroit bred hybrid of contemporary and smooth jazz with a touch of R&B, Ivan credits his influences Kirl Whalum, Gerald Albright, Joe Sample and
Kenny Garret. As one of six siblings born to the late Pastor Gaso- way and Mattie Benning, playing saxophone didn't come without financial challenges. After trying both trombone and violin at Wilson Middle School, Ivan knew he found the perfect fit with the sax. The rest
is history in the making. It was the encouragement and teaching of instructors like George ( Saxman) Benson, Rodney Bonner, and
the late Sam Sanders, that helped Ivan hone his craft. Capturing the rich heritage of Detroit, is what you
hear in every note when he plays.
"My music is a reflection of my environment living in the city. I believe music has the power to heal people's lives", says Benning. "Music should not only entertain,
it should mentally stimulate." Ivan has performed with jazz master Teddy Harris, Larry Smith and Joy Temple. Being saturated in Jazz, R&B, & Funk allowed him an experience that only
Motown can offer. In 2003, Ivan was inspired to write and arrange his first
project, 'In Spirit In Truth' with producer, Mark Dixon. He has also accompanied several artists in the jazz, gospel, and R&B arena like David Ivey, Nadir, and
Q-Point. Ivan has played stages across the country from
festivals to venues like the Charles Wright Museum. He is currently working on a new album that will be
released late 2019.
