Eric Smith

Eric Smith is a young musician who has grown up in Birmingham, Mich. From a young age, Eric submerged himself in all things music, beginning with the church choir. Not long after, he learned to play the piano, drums, and guitar. He was very involved in school concert, symphony, and jazz bands from elementary school through high school. By age 11, he had begun writing songs on the piano, morphing into a songwriting obsession. He has written an abundance of pieces that include classically-inspired, jazz, folk/rock/funk/pop songs, percussion, and has arranged for several different ensembles ranging in size from a piano trio to a marching band.Eric is now pursuing music at a collegiate level as a Jazz Studies - Piano major (Class of 2017) at Michigan State University (MSU) under the program director Rodney Whitaker. He is drawn to jazz for both the intellectual challenge as well as the pursuit of expression. That attraction to jazz has developed into a love for this American art form as well as many other styles of music. At MSU Eric studies jazz piano with Xavier Davis and has previously studied with Reginald Thomas, Dennis Tini, and Steve Taylor. He has also been coached by singer/songwriter/producer Herschel Boone and recently performed with an MSU Jazz Orchestra alongside Grammy Award-winning trumpet master Brian Lynch.He has written many songs varying in style and is self-releasing his debut EP“Hey There Miss” on October 23, 2015.
