The January Thaw Jam

The January Thaw Jam with  Luis Resto, Kenny Tudrick  & M.L. Liebler At Jazz Cafe

January 25, 7:30pm  $10

(Detroit, Mi)  Jazz Cafe welcomes a trio of Detroit originals, Luis Resto, Kenny Tudrick  and M.L. Liebler  on a triple bill in the cozy confines of Jazz Cafe in Music Hall on Saturday, January 25th at 7:30 PM.

Find more details on all three acts below:

Luis Resto is known as one of most creative and accomplished musicians and songwriters active in Detroit today, with a recording resume that ranges from Patti Smith and Iggy Pop to chart-topping hip hop artists such as Jay Z, B.o.B. and 50 Cent, and of course, Eminem.

A seminal member of the groundbreaking Was (Not Was), Resto was highly influential in the development of that Detroit band's avant-funk ethos. As Was (Not Was) began it's extended hiatus, Resto bacome an sought-after session musician, lending his talents to a wildly diverse collection of celebrated recording artists including Stevie Nicks, Mel Torme, Anita Baker and the legendary Highwaymen (Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson & Johnny Cash).

Luis raised his profile significantly in 2001, hitting the stratosphere when he began a working collaboration with Marshall Mathers on The Eminem Show, a relationship that continues to this day.

As Eminem's songwriting foil and live keyboard player, Resto composed music for the hit film 8 Mile and was co-writer of "Lose Yourself", the smash single which spent 12 weeks atop Billboard's Top 100 and garnered Luis both a Grammy and an Oscar. He continues to work with Eminem as a songwriter and keyboardist on both recording projects and in live concert.

The release of Eminem's chart-topping Recovery album in 2010 brought about much critical acclaim, most notably the single co-written by Luis, "Not Afraid" which shot straight to the #1 spot on Billboards Top 100 in its first week and received multiple GRAMMY nominations including Best Rap Song.

Luis' most recent recognizable work has been the musical arrangement and choir production for the use of "Lose Yourself" in the popular 2011 Chrysler 200 commercial featuring Eminem.

Amidst all of the excitement, he has simultaneously embarked on a solo career, releasing his debut album, Combo De Momento in 2010 and One Small Light in the Spring of 2012, finally stepping into the spotlight with his own compositions.

Kenny Tudrick is from Detroit. He's a multi-instrumentalist, producer, singer/ songwriter who is currently promoting his solo debut self-titled double album. He'd been recording and touring with the Detroit Cobras for the last ten years or so both nationally and internationally. During which time Kenny, somehow, found the time to put together his own band, Bulldog, that included Eddie Harsch (of Black Crowes fame), and wrote, recorded, produced and performed on the self-released album. Afterward, having previously co-written some of Kid Rock's biggest hit songs up to "Rock and Roll Jesus", he took a job as his lead guitarist for a stint. Aside from playing on some of rock and roll's biggest songs, for example the country guitar picking on "Cowboy" and drums on "Bawitabaw" (Kid Rock) and drums on Electric Six's "Fire", Ken played drums for Rocket 455 (who headlined the White Stripes first show at the legendary Gold Dollar), guitar for The Go, and most recently played drums for King Tuff's self-titled debut on SubPop Records. Kenny recently released an excellent CD of new material.

Jon Batiste and Stay Human

January 21, 8pm $30/$40

Jazz Cafe  is proud to present one of Jazz music's rising stars, Jon Batiste and Stay Human  for one special night and two shows, Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at 8pm

Considered by many to be the most innovative and uplifting band on the scene today, Batiste and his band have one of the most musical and entertaining live shows today and are revered for their unique approach blending many genres to create a musical mash-up that they call "social music."

Jon Batiste and Stay Human's new album 'Social Music' is out  (Razor & Tie), and critics from the The New York Times to NPR to Esquire are giving Batiste the highest praise.

"Although heavily rooted in jazz, ‘Social Music’ is not about any particular musical tradition more than it is about the intent of the music itself. The purpose of this music is to bring people together from all walks of life by creating a montage of many different music traditions and playing it with the spirit of inclusiveness," says Jon Batiste.

With his soulful voice, virtuosic piano chops and dapper sense of style, Jon Batiste has ignited the music scene. Although he comes from a renowned lineage of New Orleans musicians in his family, over the last decade he has forged his own artistic path by indelibly fusing himself within the fabric of New York City culture. At 26, Jon is the Artistic Director At Large of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem and has also received a Masters Degree from the Juilliard School for piano. Batiste brings to mind a young Ray Charles on 'Social Music' as he reinterprets America's richest musical traditions through a contemporary lens.

Watch the video for "Express Yourself":

Deeply rooted in the musical traditions of his native New Orleans, where he grew up playing with his family’s well-known band, pianist/harmonaboardist Jon Batiste has developed a uniquely current, uplifting, and playful brand of jazz that integrates his classical Juilliard training with contemporary mainstream sounds. He is currently touring with his band, Stay Human, whose mission is to bring the joy of jazz to the masses, transforming each space they play by breaking down the barriers between audience and performer, and inviting people to experience the music as they never thought it could be played. They released their first studio album, Social Music, in October 2013.
